Our hand-knotted rugs are tied knot by knot onto a cotton warp at roughly 60 knots per square inch. A 2400 × 1700 mm floor rug is close to four months of one weaver's work, which is most of what the price is.
Two
Flat weaves have no pile. The wool is beaten tight against the warp so the pattern reads the same on both faces, and the whole thing sits about 6 mm thick — thin enough to go under a door that already scrapes.
Three
Edges are hand-bound in matching wool or cotton before they leave. Jute and seagrass are woven in panels and stitched, so you will see the seam line if you look for it. We do not hide it.
Why undyed, mostly
Wool that keeps its own colour ages evenly. Dye lifts, sun-fades and settles unevenly — the fleece it came off does not.

Flat weave at close range. The weft is packed hard against a cotton warp — no pile, no backing, no latex.
Jute takes light differently along its length than across it. A runner will read as two shades depending on where you stand.

Hand-woven pieces run up to 3 cm out on stated dimensions, and undyed wool shifts in tone between fleeces.
A new hand-knotted wool rug sheds loose fibre for roughly three to six months. That is the short ends of the pile working free, not the rug coming apart. Vacuum on a low setting without a beater bar and it settles. Flat weaves and jute barely shed at all.
On hard floors, yes — flat weaves and jute will slide without one, and an underlay also takes the grit that would otherwise grind through the fibre from underneath. We do not sell them, and any 5 mm felt or rubber underlay cut to size will do the job.
Blot straight away, working in from the outside, with a dry cloth. Wool holds its lanolin and resists a fresh spill for a few minutes, so speed matters more than product. Do not soak jute or seagrass — both are plant fibre and will mark and stiffen where they get wet.
Close, not exact. A hand-woven rug comes off the loom with a few millimetres of variation along its length and can settle up to 3 cm off the stated size once it relaxes on the floor. If a piece has to fit an alcove to the centimetre, measure your space and email us before you order.
It is how many knots are tied per square inch — ours run around 60 on the hand-knotted pieces. Higher counts hold finer detail and cost more in labour. Below about 40 the pile gets loose and the pattern blurs. It is a measure of density, not of quality on its own.
You can, and undyed wool handles it better than anything dyed. It will still lighten over years of direct afternoon sun. Turn the rug end for end twice a year and it fades evenly rather than in one bright stripe.
